Overview

The HPAS (Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service) exam has a preliminary and a main exam. The preliminary exam is a screening test with two objective-type papers: General Studies and a qualifying paper (CSAT). The main exam consists of several papers, including English, Hindi, Essay, and General Studies papers covering various subjects. The syllabus for both exams includes topics like Indian history, geography, polity, economy, and the history, geography, and socio-economic development of Himachal Pradesh.

Exam Pattern:

Preliminary Examination:

  • Two objective-type papers (multiple-choice questions).
  • Paper I: General Studies.
  • Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – Qualifying paper.
  • Negative marking for incorrect answers in both papers.
  • Marks from the preliminary exam are not included in the final merit list.

Main Examination:

  • Includes English, Hindi, Essay, and General Studies papers.
  • General Studies papers cover various subjects like history, polity, economy, and Himachal Pradesh-specific topics.
  • Optional subjects are also part of the mains exam.

Preliminary Examination:

Paper I (General Studies):

  • History, Geography, Political Science, Art & Culture, and Socio-Economic Development of Himachal Pradesh. 
  • Current events of national and international importance. 
  • History of India and the Indian National Movement. 
  • Indian and World Geography. 
  • Indian Polity and Governance. 
  • Economic and Social Development. 
  • General issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change. 
  • General Science. 

Paper II (CSAT):

  • Comprehension, reasoning, and numerical abilities.

Main Examination:

  • English and Hindi: Conventional type papers covering grammar, vocabulary, composition, and translation.
  • Essay: Writing essays on various topics related to current affairs, socio-political issues, and socioeconomic issues.
  • General Studies: Covering a wide range of topics, including history, culture, polity, economy, and social issues.
  • Optional Subjects: Candidates choose one or two optional subjects based on their preference.
